Title:
U-Pb Zircon Geochronology from Volcanic Ash Beds in the Umbria-Marche Sedimentary Succession of Central Italy
Abstract:
This dataset contains CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon data from 11 volcanic ash beds from the Umbria-Marche sedimentary succession in central Italy. This includes data from volcanic ash beds previously dated using the 40Ar/39Ar method (biotite, multigrain fractions) from Massignano (Rupelian GSSP) and Monte Cagnero (proposed Chattian GSSP). The data demonstrate that previous radio-isotopic dating of the Massignano and Monte Cagnero records gave anomalously old results, and thereby eliminates the ca. 0.6 Myr discrepancy observed between radio-isotopic and astronomically tuned time scales of the Oligocene in the 2012 edition of the Geological Time Scale.
