Ar/Ar, Zircon Fission Track, Zircon (U-Th)/He, Apatite (U-Th)/He cooling ages from the Austroalpine-Pennine Transition Zone, Eastern Switzerland
Abstract:
This is original Ar/Ar, Zircon Fission Track, Zircon (U-Th)/He and Apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometric data measured to supplement a raft of published thermochronometric data from the Central Alps (see Price, PhD thesis, 2017; Price et al., 2017). Rocks were collected along a N-S corridor from the latitude of approximately Klosters (Madrisahorn) to Septimer and Maloja passes in eastern Switzerland. These data, coupled with published data, demonstrate that the Pennine Zone was descending through Ar/Ar and ZFT closure temperatures (>c. 240°C) at the same time as the Austroalpine was sitting at AHe (c. 70°C) closure temperature. The observed thermal mismatch suggests that the Austroalpine-Pennine boundary is a normal fault.
